The St Louis Surge Women’s Semi- Professional Basketball team beat the Illinois Shooting stars for a second time this season with a solid 82-75 point win. Earlier this season when the two teams played each other, the Surge came back from a 19-point deficit to win 58-55.
On June 9,2013, it was a different story; the Surge was out to make a statement, one that consisted of Daria Frazier, Gillian Letsche, and Ali Schwagmeyer getting double –doubles with Frazier and Letsche both grabbing 10 rebounds while scoring 11 and 18 point respectively and Schwagmeyer with 14 points 10 assists. Jaleesa Butler and Shanika Butler also put up double-digit numbers scoring 17 and 10 points respectively.
It was a slow start for the normally energetic Surge. They struck first, scoring in the first ten seconds of the game. After that, they would only score four more points in the first six minutes of the game. The struggle for points was not lost on the Illinois Shooting Stars either; they had only put up three points in the same amount of time. The St Louis Surge defense had them pinned causing 13 turnovers.
This grudge match was hard fought and was basically even until the end of the second quarter when the Surge took over the last two minutes of the first half and went on a six and zero run against the Shooting Stars. At half time the Surge was leading 39- 31.
Jaleesa Butler came to life in the third quarter scoring 10 of her 17 points. The Surge also made 11 of their 13 free throws. The St Louis Surge outscored the Shooting stars 26-17 in the third quarter sealing the Illinois Shooting Stars fate as the Surge held on to the lead until the game was over.
The Surge remains undefeated with a 4-0 record.
