The St. Louis Surge opened the 2019 GWBA season in Wisconsin at the GLO’s Menominee Nation Arena. The GLO, aided by the absences of Surge starters Rebecca Harris, Nici Gilday, and Kristi Bellock, handled the undermanned Surge with ease to the tune of a 92-66 victory. When the Surge returned home last weekend to face off with the Flint Monarchs, they were reinvigorated by Harris, Gilday, and Bellock, who combined for 63 of the team’s 105 points in a 105-89 win. Now, the Surge are complete and ready for revenge.

On Saturday, June 15th at 4:35 pm (doors open at 3:30 pm) at Washington University’s Field House, the Surge will once again take on the GLO. The GLO currently sit atop the GWBA standings as the lone undefeated squad with three wins to zero losses, while the 1-1 Surge own second place in the standings. The GLO have been beyond dominant in their first three games of GWBA play, with an average margin of victory of 45.3 points, including their most recent game, a 71-point drubbing of the Chicago Breeze.

The Surge’s 26-point defeat in the season opener remains the closest game the GLO have played, but Saturday’s rematch promises to be an even tighter affair. In her season debut last weekend, Harris, the Surge’s scoring leader in 2018, was a force. She dropped 35 points on 9-for-11 from 2, 4-for-8 from 3, and 5-for-5 from the line, good for an 82.6% true shooting percentage, which adjusts for 3-point shots being worth more than 2-pointers and incorporates the value of free throws. Gilday, meanwhile, opened the scoring for the Surge last Saturday and never looked back, adding 14 points and 4 assists of her own in her Surge debut. Bellock was reliable as ever with an efficient 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

Gilday and Harris were invaluable, creating highlights as defensive playmakers and ludicrous shot-makers:

The GLO have not yet faced a challenge like the fully-loaded Surge.
